The Learning Vine Parent-Cooperative Preschool at The Grapevine in Antrim has openings for September. Meeting two mornings per week, the program is for children between 3½ and 5 years of age. It offers both a drop-off option and a parent cooperative, where parents stay on site and are active in the program—preparing snack, working in the classroom, coordinating activities and projects, organizing field trips and special events, making books, and connecting with other parents. Parents also have daily opportunities to
observe their children at “work.”
Learning Vine teacher Carol Lunan is a Master’s level educator, certified early childhood teacher and parenting educator with over 25 of experience. In addition to working with the children, Lunan is available to work with parents on any challenges encountered by parents raising preschoolers. In the words of one parent, “I love that Carol teaches the parents right alongside the children. This program is amazing!”
Morning at The Learning Vine begins with Sing Time, where parents and children greet each other and begin their day singing favorite songs. Next the children make plans for the morning by choosing activities. Sponge painting, block building and dramatic play are just a few of the options. As choices are made, children place their colorful nametags on the “Planning Board.” During “work time” children use their creativity, as well as decision-making, problem solving, investigative and social skills.
Snack Time provides opportunity for socializing and learning to help, as well as good nutrition. Families take turns providing snack for the group. The preschoolers pour their own drinks (with help) and pass along snacks to each other. Cleaning up is everyone's responsibility. After snack, the children head outdoors to the fenced-in play yard.
Field trips out in the community are a regular feature: Apple picking at Norway Hill, pizza making at Rick & Diane’s Restaurant, and planting at Tenney Farm to name a few. The Learning Vine preschool groups are also known for their handmade books, colorful bulletin boards and art shows.
According to Grapevine Executive Director Kristen Vance, whose son is a Learning Vine alum, “This really is an outstanding preschool program. Carol Lunan is one of the finest, most creative and inspirational educators I know. She really brings out the best in children.”
