patch.jpgSilverling Circle #58 is the local chapter of SpiralScouts International, a non-profit, Earth-centered, co-ed youth scouting group.  Jess Baribault is the Granite Tribe Coordinator.  For more information, visit www.SpiralScouts.org, email SpiralScoutsJess@yahoo.com or call 588-4219.

SpiralScouts is an open, inclusive program, based in the principles of ecology, gender balance, and respect for diversity.  Designed for families of minority faiths and backgrounds, its activities focus around outdoor and personal skills, seasonal celebrations, and awareness of the connections between living things.

Some of the badges and awards that scouts earn are: Hiking, Camping, Fire Safety, Academic Achievement, Global Ecology, Drumming, Photography, Birding, Sculpture, First Aid & Personal Safety, Cooking, Nutrition, and others.  An important part of the program is Community Service, for which there are badges every season of the year.  These have included park and shoreline cleanups, fair-trade chocolate sales to preserve rainforests, food drives, and writing letters to soldiers.

Silverling Circle participates in community events throughout the year, such as Home & Harvest Day, Childen & The Arts Day, the Yule Festival, Stonewall Farm's Sap Gathering Contest, and fundraisers like Celebrate Samhain.  A Tribal camping trip is held every summer solstice, with additional trips and activities as planned by Circle members.

There are three age levels in the program: Fireflies, for ages 3 to 8, SpiralScouts, for ages 8 to 14, and Pathfinders, for ages 14 and up.  Silverling Circle includes mainly Fireflies and SpiralScouts; all ages are welcome.  Adults may also join as Volunteers.  Registration is $13 per year and includes the SpiralScouts patch and neck cord kit.

Families are invited to check out a meeting before joining.  Meetings are held the second Sunday of each month at 2:00.  Please call Jess at 588-4219 for location details.
