History of the Library in Antrim

1866 The Antrim Library Association was formed (the collection was kept in the front dining room in the Maplehurst Inn)

1892 The town voted for the establishment of a free library

1894 The books were moved into the town hall which was recently built

1905 James A. Tuttle, a lifelong resident of Antrim, left his estate to the town of Antrim for a library

Edwin R. Clark of Lowell, MA was selected as the architect of the library and it was built by James Whitlet. The library is a Colonial Revival style with a wooden double door in the front and a low-pitched hip roof. The walls are brick and the foundation is stone.

July 12, 1908, the library was open to the public.

March 2006 at the Antrim Town Meeting a warrant article was overwhelmingly passed to raise funds for a new 2-story, 4,000’ addition at the Tuttle Library. On Oct 14 the ground was broken on the new wing. In 2007 the foundation was begun by a local contractor, John Kendall Custom Builders, selected for the construction. Construction was planned to be completed on the 100 anniversary of the construction of the initial Library building. The new addition was opened on Sept 17 2007 to the public.

In June 2022 a new Amish-styled Gazebo was constructed on town land in front of the Library. Funds were provided by both the Antrim Library Trustees and the Antrim Historical Society thanks to generous gifts by the late Donald A Dunlap, a local cabinet maker. In Don’s honor, the gazebo was dedicated for the Donald Dunlap Memorial Gazebo. In addition to the gazebo, a commemorative brick walkway was put down. Funds come from individual donations for those who purchased the laser-etched personalized brick. Assembly of the Gazebo was done by Don’s nephew John Dunlap with much support from the local community. The Brick walkway was completed by Gordon Webber.

Today our circulating collection includes approximately 35,000 books, DVDs, CDs, magazines, and video games. Additionally, our patrons have access to over 25,000 eBooks, and thousands of articles and reference materials through our databases.  The library purchases materials that appeal to all ages, interests, and endeavors to present all points of view on current and historical issues, as prescribed by the American Library Association Bill of Rights
