Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.
Event Date:
Thursday, June 22, 2023 - 2:15am to 3:15pm

On Thursday June 22nd  between 2:15 and 3:15 p.m., at the James A. Tuttle Library, Antrim residents will discuss Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.  Sixty illustrations accompany this  tale of a Native teenager who chooses to leave his reservation in order to attend a nearly all-white high school.  Frequently challenged by aspiring censors, this memoir examines teenage drugs and sexuality.

Here are some possible discission questions:

  1. In what sense is Junior (the novel’s protagonist) a “part-time Indian”?
  2. How does Junior’s ambition to be a famous cartoonist conflict with his membership in his Native community?
  3. How satisfying and realistic is the novel’s ending?
  4. What messages is Alexie conveying?
